This type of question assesses your knowledge of key features and characteristics of the period studied.
Example:
Describe two key features of the attempts to colonise Virginia in the 1580s.

Tips:
You need to mention a valid key feature identified and also provide supporting information.
Don’t ‘over-write’ your answer to this question. You should spend about five minutes on this.
Explain why... (12 marks)
This type of question is focussing on causation – the reasons why something happened. It is also assessing your knowledge of the period. You will be given stimulus points to prompt you in the right direction.
Example:
Explain why the Throckmorton Plot (1583) was a threat to Queen Elizabeth.
You may use the following in your answer:
- Mary, Queen of Scots
- Foreign Threat
You must also use own knowledge.
