Key Elements of Tragedy

• Antagonist - villain; the character on the dark side
• Protagonist - hero/heroine; the character on the light side
• Anagnorisis - critical discovery/recognition of a person and their morals/something that illuminates the protagonist's downfall
• Bathos - an effect of disappointment by n accidental change in mood from the sublime to the ridiculous
• Pathos - a sense of pity/to appeal to emotions/motives
• Cartharsis - an emotional release
• Hamartia - a fatal flaw
• Hubris - excessive pride/self-confidence
• Melodrama - sensual dramatic piece with over dramatic characters and event to appeal to emotions
