Electronic Structure: sub-shells and orbitals

Shells are split into sub-shells which are labelled s, p and d.

n = 1 --> s sub-shell --> can hold 2 electrons maximum

n = 2 --> s and p sub-shells --> 2 electrons on s, 6 electrons on p, 8 in total

n = 3 --> s, p and d sub-shells --> "                     "          10 electrons on d, 18 total

n = 4 --> s, p, d and f sub-shells --> "                 "            "       14 electrons on f, 32 in total

n = 1 --> 1s

n = 2 --> 2s, 2p
