Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the breaking down of ionic compunds using electricity. An ionic compund is a electrostatic force of attraction between a positively and negatively charged ion. The ionic compund that is used during electrolysis needs to be molten as the electrons are then delocalised which means they are free to move and they can then carry their charges over to their electrodes.

An example of an electrode (an electrical conductor) is graphite which is cheap to use as an electrode and it is also a good metal conductor as it has free electrons. You can use graphite with anything you are trying to electrolyse.
