Always done on ionic substances - ions strongly held together

An elecrolyte: ionic compound freely moving in liquid 

Anode: positive electrode (neg. ions)
       loses electrons/charge: oxidised

Cathode: negative electrode (pos. ions):
         gains electrons: reduced

Aluminuium: much more reactive

Produced from its ore (bauxite) containing aluminium oxide
