MALENKOV'S NEW COURSE

Malenkov initiated the New Course, arguing that the US would inevitably fall due to capitalism, and the USSR needed to take its focus to consumer goods and improvement of living conditions, with the new developments of nuclear arms and military/economic strains.

SOVIET WITHDRAWAL FROM FINLAND

In 1947, the Finnish Soviet Peace Treaty gave the USSR £300 million in reparation and land from the Finland border and the Porkkhala region. In 1955, despite Molotov's protests at the Central Committee of the Communist Party's meeting, Khrushchev decided the zone gave no strategic benefit and troops withdrew in 1956. 

AUSTRIA-STATE TREATY

After the war, in West Austria, it was secretly armed and given Marshall Aid. In East Austria the USSR took money for economic benefit. In 1954, it was decided to improve East-West relations, neutrality was needed. In 1955 troops were removed, as decided by Nikita Khrushchev.
