The future of self is to realise ownness: Eigenheit
Stirner made a distinction between what is perceived as the self and 'ownness'
- The philosopher who thinks they are free and independent needs to recognise that to be truly free, they must be freed from all obligation to any conscious or subconscious ideal
- They must realise their 'ownness' (Eigenheit)
In relation to the example of giving to the poor, Stirner would argue that doing as you will/please is being truly free because it has nothing to do with whether it was a good or bad thing to give money to the poor, but rather because I am my own person and not a slave to obligation
