Effects of the Wall Street Crash 1929

·       Officially, it is said that ⅓ of the population were unemployed by 1932. However, this figure is more likely to be around 8 million people.

·       The central government would pay for benefits for 2 years, however after these 2 years people had to rely on the Local Authorities.

·       The Wall Street Crash had a large impact on towns that relied on single industries. An example of this is Brand Erbisdorff. By April 1931, after the local glassworks had closed, nearly half the population was receiving welfare payments(benefits).

·       Diseases spread due to poor nutrition and living conditions. For example, TB and rickets.

·       There were numerous cases of malnutrition in children.

·       Suicide rates increased

·       Tent cities and shanty towns appeared on the outskirts of major cities such as Berlin due to the major poverty levels.

·       In the 14-25 age group, 39% of males and 25.2% of females were unemployed.

·       1000 married women were sacked from the Reich Postal Service.

·       The campaign that was waged by right- wing parties against the employment of ‘double earners’ achieved some success in May 1932 when a law was passed allowing married women civil servants to be dismissed.
