EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONALISATION
- DISINHIBITED ATTACHMENT- clingy attention seeking behaviour
- PEER RELATIONSHIPS- less likely to have best friends or join social groups
- REDUCED IQ- lower IQ later in life if not adopted early
- ATTACHMENT TO PARENTS- may struggle to form attachments
- ANACLITIC DEPRESSION- impaired social and intellectual development
ROMANIAN ORPHANS STUDY
- PROCEDURE- 165 Romanian orphans adopted in the UK, Physical, cognitive and emotional development tested at age 4,6,11 and 15 yrs, A control group was made up of 57 british orphans
- FINDINGS- Adopted before 6m= 102 IQ, Adopted between 6m-2yrs= 86 IQ, Adopted after 2yrs= 77 IQ, Children adopted after 6m showed signs of disinhibited attachments
