Eynseck proposed that extroverts and psychotics are more attracted to sport.

Athletes are found to be more independant and less anxious than non athletes.

Athletes are proposed to be more stable that parctipate.

However various studies, most recently in 2007, have decided that there is not enough difference between the two groups to prove conclusive. I believe this would support the interactionist theory, as the persons psycholgical core defines their personality, but it can be slightly changed by the activivites they participate in.
