Functionalism

Durkheim (1903):

  • Society needs a sense of solidarity (individual members must feel part as a single 'body' or community). Without solidarity, individuals would become selfish.
  • Education creates solidarity by transmitting society's culture.
  • Teaches specialist skills to help individuals play their part in the social division of labour.

Parsons (1961):

  • School
