EDUCATION- class differences in achievement (external factors)
MATERIAL DEPRIVATION
POVERTY
Department for Education (2012) - barely a third of pupils eligible for free school meals achieve 5 or more GCSES at A*-C, as against nearly two thirds of other pupils.
Jan Flaherty (2004) - money problems in the family are significant factor in younger childrens non-attendance at school.
HOUSING
- Overcrowding - harder to study, disturbed sleep, poor health and welfare, pyschological distress.
DIET AND HEALTH
Marilyn Howard (2001) - young people from poorer homes have lower intake of energy, vitamins and minerals. This may result in more absences from school due to illness, and difficulties concentrating in class.
Richard Wilkinson (1996) - Children from poorer homes are also more likely to have emotional or behavioural problems.
Jo Blanden and Stephen Machin (2007) - low income famillies were more likely to engage in 'externalising' behaviour which are likely to disrupt their schooling.
