INFLUENCES ON EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
HOME FACTORS:
- Parents values and expectations: high occupational parents are likely to have high expectations and expect them to do well thus are likely to monitor their children's school performance
- Parent's educational background: high level educational qualifications- more able to help with homework and monitor progress.
- Economic circumstances: Students from working class and minority ethnic groups are likely to attend the deprived areas. Some can suffer from MATERIAL DEPRIVATION- lack of money, resources and access to facilities(quiet space and books).
- Cultural BACKGROUND: Research shows that chinese cultural backgrounds value education and so chinese pupils develop high educational ambitions and get positive self esteem from being 'good pupils'.
SCHOOL FACTORS:
- School based resources: Fee charging private schools have better resources and facilities than state schools. Deprived schools are likely not able to provide the right quality or quantity of school material such as textbooks.
- School curriculum: School curriculum can be seen as biased towards the white European cultures as critics argue that black history, cultures should be more included into the curriculum.
- Teachers expecations and labelling: Some teachers have lower expectations of working class and ethnic minority pupils- this affect show much attention teachers give towards these students.
