RANDOM SAMPLING

• Representative sample of study area wanted
• Involves 2 measuring tapes placed along 2 sides of area like axes
• Random number generator (e.g a calculator) used to get coordinates for sampling points
• Large number of samples- to minimise skewed sample and increase reliability 

SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING

• Choose where to take sample as you are investigating a specific pattern in ecosystem
• Most common kind is using a transect 
• Line transect- organisms touching the transect are recorded (unrepresentative)
• Belt transect- quadrats placed at intervals, organisms within each quadrat recorded…
