Ecology Notes Pt. 1

Ecology - the study of living things and their interactions with each other and the environment.

Ecosystem - a self-supporting system of organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment.

Habitat - a place within an ecosystem where specific organisms live.

Population - all of the organisms of a particular species living in an ecosystem at a particular time.

Community - all of the different species living in an ecosystem.

How do organisms interact?

1. Competition - the struggle for resources e.g food, shelter, mates (plants compete for carbon dioxide, mineral ions, light and water).

2. Feeding - food chains show simple feeding relationships within an ecosystem…
