Cause: Movement along a crack in the plate at a destructive boundary.
What preparation had been undertaken before the quake?
Very little. There as no local disaster planning, buildings were earthquake proof and communications were poor (there was few roads and roads that were there were badly constructed).
Primary Effects
1) Around 80,000 deaths, mostly due to collapsed buildings.
2) Hundreds of thousands were injured.
3) Entire villages and thousands of buildings were destroyed.
