Metals can be split into three categories; ferrous, non ferrous and alloys
Ferrous - metals are magnetic and contain iron
Non ferrous - metals that dont contain iron and arent magnetic
alloys - two or more different types of metals combined together for a certain function e.g. to improve strength
Ferrous metals
Ferrous metals include;
cast iron - good corrosion resistance
wrought iron - mallueable
mild steel - ductile, tough, high tensile strength
high carbon steel - low impact strength, used where hardness is needed e.g hammers
