1960's - introduced 2 groups of drugs:

• Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors ( MAOIS )
• Tricyclic antidepressants

Monoamine theory of depression: Depression related to low levels of serotonin and noradrenaline - drugs raise these levels.

But both groups serious side effects:

MAOIS = interact badly with some food groups and medication
