Douglas and Suicide

Douglas 1967 - the meaning of suicide

He argues that defining suicide simply by referring to the physical fact of killing oneself misses the central issue, which is that suicide has different meanings to those who take their own lives and their motives can vary too. Suicide needs much greater exploration

Douglas suggested that those who commit suicide could see their action in at least 4 ways

As a means of transforming the self – a person commits suicide as a means of gaining release
