Domestic violence

Physical, phychological, sexual or ginancial violence that takes place within an intimate or family type relationship and forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour

Types of abuse:

  • physical
  • emotional
  • verbal
  • sexual
  • financial
  • stalking

Statistics

  • based on single incidents and without regard to severity of violence, whether it was repeated, the context in which it took place, and exclude sexual assults and emotional abuse
  • 1 in 4 women will be a victem of domestic abuse in their lifetime - many of these on a number of occassions
  • domestic violence accounts for 1/6th of all violent crime
  • one incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute
  • domestic violence statistics are often underestimated
    • victems are unwilling to report it (women average 35 assualts before filing a report)
    • polics and prosecutors may be reluctant to record, investigate, or prosecute cases as they are not prepared…
