DNA Barcoding
· DNA barcoding was proposed by Paul Hebert in 2003
· These short sequences are different to each species
· Can be used to identify organisms from small fragments of material
· The gene region that is being used for almost all groups is a 648 base-pair in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene (CO1)
· The advantage of using CO1 is that it can be sequenced quickly and cheaply
· However, CO1 is not effective for identifying plants
