Jet lag:  travelling across timezones affects our biological rhythms because our natural rhythm is not synchronised with the light/dark cycle

  • Jet lag affects the sleep-wake cycle because it is not synchronised with the light/dark cycle
  • It is worst when flying from west to east
  • The SCN will eventually adjust, but it can take a few days (synchronisation)
  • Severity is affected by direction of travel, number of timezones crossed
