displacement and redox reactions

HideShow resource information

The reactivity of metals can be determined using displacement reactions.

Aa more reactive metal will displace an ion of a less reactive metal in a compound.  A displacement reaction is also a redox reaction.  Redox is when both oxidation and reduction occur at the same time.

Oxidation is the gain of oxygen and the loss of electrons.

Reduction is the loss of oxygen and the gain of electrons.

Redox Reactions

Mg (s) + CuO (s) ---> MgO (s) + Cu (s)

Magnesium has been oxidised and copper
