Discuss the influence of individual differences on independent behaviour. (12 marks)

Whether or not someone is obedient or someone conforms is likely to be affected by a number of things, not least a person’s disposition or personality. A key aspect of personality related to independent behaviour is locus of control. This refers to the extent to which an individual feels that they are in control – are they themselves in control or are they being controlled? If a person feels that they are in control they are said to have an internal locus of control. Alternatively, people who feel that things are beyond their control are said to have an external locus of control.

Research supports the idea that people with an internal locus of control are less likely to obey authority
