Discuss Zimbardo's research into conformity

  • In Zimbardo's study, he placed people into the roles of prisoner or guard.
  • Guards conformed to their role, acting sadistically and mean.
  • However not all guards were sadistic and mean, there were a few good ones who did the prisoners favours.
  • Researchers have said that this means that they chose to be that way, rather than blindly conforming.
  • The prisoners were kept in really bad conditions.
  • They had their identity removed and were only refered to by numbers. They also were kept awake all night, causing some of them to be driven to mental break downs. 
  • This lead to people questioning whether the studies were ethical. Although at the time it was considered ethical as it didn't have deception, yet the particpants then experienced psychological harm, and should have stopped it earlier.
