Discuss situational variables affecting obedience.

?
  • Milgram did an original study into obedience, making people electrocute others if they got things wrong.
  • He found 65% went to maximum shock level of 450v, and 100% went past 300v.
  • However, when looking at the research, it is entirely experimentally reductionist.
  • This means that he reduced people behaviours down to variables (what percentage of voltage they gave)
  • He then, however, increased his research by looking into situational factors.
  • One of the situational factors is the location where the experiment was happening.
  • Milgram moved his study from the university building to a run down office building.
  • Obedience rate of going to 450% dropped to 48%.
  • However there is an ethical implication here of deception. It means that they could potentially cause psychological harm to their participants.
  • Another situational variable is proximity.
  • Milgram found it dropped to 40% when the teacher and learner were in the same room.
  • When…
