4 digestive compartments

Rumen ( part 1)

  • largest part, actually a specialized part of oesophagus.
  • can hold up to 50 gallons of undigested food ( cudd)
  • contains bacteria that soft and digest food (cellulose) and provide a source of protein.
  • bacteria respire anaerobically so fermentation occurs - resulting in the production of gases.
  • this is a symbiotic
