Digestive system

?
  • Digestion involves the breakdown of large, insoluble molecules into smaller, soluble ones
  • Digestive enzymes are produced by specialised cells in gut lining
  • Enzymes pass out of cells and come into contact with the food
  • Each reaction controlled by specific enzyme:

- AMYLASE: (a carbohydrase) produced by the salivary glands, the pancreas & the SI. Catalyses the breakdown of starch into sugars in the mouth / SI

- PROTEASE: produced by the stomach, the pancreas & SI. Catalyses the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and SI
