Movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (or down a concentration gradient) until they are evenly spread is called diffusion. This happens because of constant random movement of particles.

Factors affecting diffusion:

  • Distance - the shorter the distance the particles have to move, the faster the rate of diffusion
  • Concentration gradient - the greater the rate in concentration between 2 regions, the faster the rate of diffusion
  • Surface area - the greater the surface area…
