differentiation is where a cell becomes specialised to perform a specific task. as cells develop they have different subcellular structures allowing them to turn into different types of cells. when animal cells become specialised they lose the previous features they had. Plant cells however do not lose this ability. differentiated cells are mainly used to replace or repair damages cells.

examples of specialised cells

sperm cells - are specialised to get the male DNA to the female DNA. they contain genetic information and transport it to the female egg in order to fertilise.

sperm cells have adaptations .

  • a long tail to allow the sperm cell to travel
  • middle section is full of mitochondria which supplies the cell energy
  • acrosome (head of sperm)
