1) The patient's blood is taken from their forearm+ passed via tubes into a dialysis machine

2) An anticoagulant, e.g. heparin is added to the blood to prevent clots forming whilst the blood flows through the machine

3) Inside the machine, the blood flows on one side of a partially permeable membrane
