CONTINUING ISSUES IN DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY:

1) Ethics: Refers to the correct rules of conduct necessary when carrying out research.

  • Informed Consent - Psychologists should ensure that all participants fully understand all aspects of the research before they agree to take part. Need permission from parents or school and child if underage.
  • Coercion - Avoid coercion and be aware of power relationships and demand characteristics
  • Deception - The researcher should avoid deceiving participants about the nature of the research unless absolutely essential; even then this needs to be judged by an independent expert.
  • Protection from Harm - Psychologists should protect participants from distress, including physical and psychological harm, just from participating in the study.
  • Confidentiality - Psychologists need to maintain participant confidentiality
