Democritus said that all matter is made of identical lumps called "atomos"
John Dalton(1804) Agreed with Democritus and said that
- All matter is made up of tiny solid spheres which cant be broken up
- Each element has a different sphere/type of atom
JJ Thompson contradicted Dalton by saying that: Electrons could be removed from atoms. Atoms aren't solid spheres but contain smaller negatively charged electrons. This developed the Plum Pudding Model: a ball of positive charge with negative electrons stuck in it
Rutherford & Ernest Marsden Tried firing a beam of positively charged alpha particles at a thin gold foil - Alpha Scattering Experiment.
