Development of the Atom

Democritus said that all matter is made of identical lumps called "atomos" 

John Dalton(1804) Agreed with Democritus and said that

  • All matter is made up of tiny solid spheres which cant be broken up 
  • Each element has a different sphere/type of atom

JJ Thompson contradicted Dalton by saying that: Electrons could be removed from atoms. Atoms aren't solid spheres but contain smaller negatively charged electrons. This developed the Plum Pudding Model: a ball of positive charge with negative electrons stuck in it
