The texts in the exam will use lots of different language techniques to make them more effective.

Descriptive language includes imagery such as:

  • Metaphors
  • Similes
  • Personification

Writers often give descriptions based on their senses:

  • Sight
  • Smell
  • Hearing
  • Touch
  • Taste

When writers use descriptive language they also commonly use lots of adjectives like "huge" or "fiery" to give a specific impression of something.

The main use for descriptive language is to give the reader a clear image in their head of what the writer is describing. It makes the text more interesting.
