Research by Marmot et al conducted in 1991 investigated the relationship between job control and stress-related illness. Marmot conducted a 3 year longitudinal study on over 3000 whitehall civil servants, measuring their job control and stress related illness. Findings showed that individuals who had low job control were 4 times more likely to die with a heart attack. Researchers also found a negative correlation; as job control decreased, the likelyhood of stress-related illness increased. 

Further research concluded that supported Marmots findings of cardiac abnormalities, showed that high job demands where individuals had low levels of job control increased their chances of heart disease.
