Explaining the role of media in creating violence

Social learning theory can help explain how violence and aggression from the media can be observed and imitated. 

According to social learning theory young children pay attention to the behaviour of their role model, if there models display violent behaviour, it is observed and imitated. This is especially likely if the role model is the same gender, likeable and powerful. These models showing violent behaviour are even more likely to be imitated if their behaviour is seen to be rewarded – this is vicarious reinforcement.  These factors present a problem for parents and authorities concerned about the effect of models on behaviour, especially on children.
