Describe and Evaluate the Humanisti Approach in Psychology

Humanistic psychology emerged in the 1960's, largely as a result of the work of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. It became as the 'third force' in psychology, alongside behavioruist and psychodynamic appoaches. Rogers believed Freud had dealt with the 'sick' side of psychology so the humanistic approach concerned itself with explanations of healthy growth in individuals. 

The humanistic approach is a 'person centeres' approach concerned with the subjective, conscious experience of the person. They therefore believe that scientific methods are innapropriate on humans. 

Human behaviour is motivated by 'deficiency needs' and 'growth needs'. These needs are shown as a hierarchy of needs where, from the bottom, each need must be satisfied, before the next can motivate us. This was created by Maslow.
