Failure to function adequately:

From an individual's point of view, abnormality can be judged in terms of not being able to cope. Feeling depressed does not become a problem for the individual until the depression begins to interfere with their ability to cope with day-to-day living. When this happens people may label their own behaviour as abnormal and seek treatment.
