Mainly deciduous trees that shed their leaves each year for several months to cope with reductions in light and lower temperatures.
Trees have deep root systems so they can access groundwater and nutrients. The deep roots help to break up bedrock and weathering of the rocks adds to nutrients.
Soil has a well developed humus layer at the top, where there is a lot of biological activity in spring/summer which breaks down the leaf litter form the previous autumn.
The herb layer flowers in spring so they can grow before the larger plants do and block out sunlight.
