Validation

Detecting INACCURATE, INCOMPLETE or UNREASONABLE data. Performed by computer SOFTWARE.

Types of Validation

RANGE CHECK: makes sure the data is WITHIN A CERTAIN RANGE.

e.g. Applicants must be 18 or over.

PRESENCE CHECK: ensures that data that MUST be entered in to the system IS entered.

e.g. Mandatory fields: cannot register for email account without password, password field needs a presence check.

CHECK DIGIT: used for entering large numbers into a computer system, e.g. CREDIT CARDS.
