What is Data?

Anything that is written or spoken is made up of data. If you break any words down you eventually, at the bottom of the pile, find data.

The official definition is:

"Data is the raw facts and figures before they have been processed"

"raw facts and figures" means without meaning - it should be impossible to understand what the letters and figures stand for.

EXAMPLE: BAT45&&7, 478GH89", JD50££DS.

These are examples of data. There is no way of telling what they mean as they have no meaning. At this time they are just a random series of numbers and letters.
