Data analysis: Kinds of data

Data analysis: Kinds of data

Qualitative and quantitative data

  • Qualitative data
    • Expressed in words rather than numbers or statistics, may take the form of a written description
    • A transcript from an interview, extract from a diary or notes recorded within a counselling session are all examples

+Offers much more richness of detail

  • Gives ppts more licence to develop their thoughts, feelings and opinions on the given subject

+Has greater external validity

  • Provides researchers with a more meaningful insight in the ppts views

-Often difficult to analyse

  • Patterns and comparisons within and between data may be hard to identify

-Conclusions rely on subjective interpretations and these may be subject to bias

  • Quantitative data
    • Expressed numerically
