      1. VALUES AND ATTITUDES

DOUGLAS found WC parets:

  • placed less value on education
  • were less ambitious for their kids
  • offered less encouragement
  • took less interest in the education
  • visited schools less often
  • less likely to discussprogress

- As a result their children had lower levels of motivation

- HOWEVER, this view has been criticised by BLACKSTONE & MORTIMORE who reject the view that WC parents are not interested in their kids' schooling and that parents evenings are only missed because they have to work longer hours & they can also be put off by the MC atmosphere.

HYMAN says the WC are part of their own subculture - their beliefs, norms, values etc. are different. He refers to these beliefs as SELF IMPOSED BARRIERS according to SUGARMAN these barriers are:

  • FATALISM - the idea that you cant change who you are/your status - you are who you are
  • COLLECTIVISM -
  • IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION - seeking pleasure now, not worrying about the future/school, living for the moment
  • PRESENT TIME ORIENTATION - having no long term plans/goals
