Cultural diffusion: the spread of cultural traits globally, such as language, food, clothing, religion and tradtitions

Other factors creating cultural diffusion: 

  • Tourism and migration: 4.5m Brits (8% of the UK) live abroad, much higher than USA (0.8%) - many retired UK diasporas in Benidorm with English shops and American restaurants
  • Glocalisation by TNCs such as McDonald's (McDonaldisation) which produce goods and services to serve the country and local cultures within it, e.g. Maharaja Mac, McAloo Tikki and Crispy Chinese

Positive impacts:

  • Globish (basic form of English consisting of 1500 words spoken by approximately 4 million people in former British colonies such as Singapore) allows people to communicate, especially since the spread of TNCs which aids the development of hybridism of Western cultures
  • Local cultures are being preserved through upkeeping of heritage sites: 1.3 million tourists visited Stonehenge in 2015
