Cultural Differences Explanation and Evaluation

Both DSM and ICD are based on western culture and not based on cultures with social or spiritual approaches to mental disorders. Different conditions which cause less stigma in certain cultures are more likely to be diagnosed in these cultures than others:

e.g. ‘Neurasthenia in China could be categorised as depression in the U.K’

Some mental disorders also lead to social stigma, in Japan Schizophrenia is known as ‘the disease of the disorganised mind’ so isn't diagnosed.
