Fidel Castro took power in Cuba in 1959 

US had buisness partnerships with Cuba 

Castro nationalised US companies in Cuba

- took over US owned buisnesses 

-gave land to ordinary cuban farmers

-forged links with Krushchev 

-recieved military and economic aird from Krushchev 

Bay of Pigs

US were furious with Castro due to relationship with Soviets

Gave support to Cubans who had left Cuba to escape Castro's regime

Jan 1961: 

Eisenhower broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba
