- during this period, King Lear clearly wasn't as popular as Hamlet or Macbeth.
- the play was rewritten by Nahum Tate, in 1681. He believed the ending was too gloomy and the struture was disorganised. His version of the play included a happy ending, where Lear doesn't die, and a romance between Edgar and Cordelia.
18th Century
