Social order:

Functionalism- argues that modern society is based on value consensus or broad agreement amoung people regarding norms and values. this consensus arises from the socilaisation process during which peopel learn societys norms and values. social order is maintained over time because most people support, and agree to conform to the rules.

Marxists- sees capitalist society as based on conflicting intrests between two main social classes: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. class conflict occurs between them because they have opposing intrests. social order is maintained over time, however because the bourgeoisie have the power to enforce order and influence the laws.

Formal social control:

  • This is based on laws and written rules and is linked to the ways in which the state controls peoples behaviour.
