State Crime - Crimes committed by governments and their agents

  • (1) Crimes of mass murder (genocide) and violence committed against one's own citizens, eg. Stalin killed millions of his own citizens in the USSR whereas in the 1970's the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot killed one fifth of the population in Cambodia.
  • Ethnic cleasnsing refers to attempts by some governments to wipe out or remove minority ethnic and religious groups eg. Saddam Hussain killed thousands of Marsh Arabs in Iraq whilst in Rwanda, the Hutu majority tried to wipe out the Tutsi minority in 1994.
  • This type of state crime also includes torture and executions without trial of political opponents.
  • UK soldiers have been accused of massacres (Bloody Sunday in NI) killing prisoners…
