  • Drawn from records kept bu the police and other official agencies 
  • They are published every six months by the Home Office 
  • They cannot be taken simply at face value 


  • Provides historical changes over time 
  • Gives both sides of crime 


  • This change over a six-month period, not enough time to recognise crime 
  • Police don't always record them
